Red Coat Solder Cat
2009Jane Austen RegencyMilitaryVictorian-Edwardian
Dashing and suave Mr. Wickam Cat was my first painting in the Regency Cats Collection… an experiment at blending my two favorite obsessions, Jane Austen and cats.
After his warm reception, I immediately followed with Mr Darcy Cat …and continue adding new characters on a semi-regular basis.
I painted him with acrylics onto a sheet of Canson fine art paper, trimmed by hand to measure 10″x8″ (25.4cm x 20.3cm).
I remember the time when I liked a red coat myself very well — and indeed, so I do still at my heart.
He was modeled after my own tuxedo cat, Dominic (a.k.a. Sir Dommie) … who likes to flatter himself by strutting around the house like a self-assured Lothario.
My original plan was to paint Dom portraying a series of male characters, depending on his various moods, however I’ve since expanded to include other colors/breeds of cats.
The original painting has been sold; a revised version of Red Coat Soldier Cat is available to purchase as archival quality reproduction prints, greeting cards, and gifts, in my Etsy shop.
